Alma Woodsey Thomas (1891-1978) was an art educator and Abstract Expressionist who allowed no barriers to inhibit her creative process and art career, including her identity as a black woman.

Among several of Thomas’ works exhibited in the White House during the Obama presidency was a variation on Matisse’s The Snail which she named Watusi (Hard Edge) after a Chubby Checker song. Thomas developed her signature style—large, abstract paintings filled with dense, irregular patterns of bright colors—in her 70s.
