My collage of shapes cut from Charlotte Park's artwork.
Charlotte Park (1918-2010) had close ties to Jackson Pollack and Lee Krasner. Her work shows their influence, as well as that of Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, and her husband, artist James Brooks (1906-1992). Park's art is gutsy. While her demeanor was that of a calm and collected New Englander, she was actually strong and passionate, with both spontaneity and deliberation in her paintings.
Charlotte Park was basically introverted, and Jim Brooks was even more so. It was against their nature to self-promote, and it took great effort to maintain a career. Charlotte knew that only Jim had a chance at that point in time, and put her weight behind him so they both could survive as artists. Consequently, they managed to live comfortably off the sales of his work for the final 50 years of their life together, allowing them both to paint, unencumbered by having to hold steady jobs.
