In a letter to his uncle in 1911, Egon Schiele wrote: “I shall go so far that people will be seized with terror at the sight of each of my works of ‘living’ art.” His "interest in human suffering and sexuality pioneered an approach to figurative painting where the psychological traumas and fixations of his subjects became apparent in contorted bodies, bruised skin, erotic gestures, and androgynous facial features."
